Here is an interesting article on our potential future life here on earth.
The opening paragraphs sum it up nicely/sadly:
The world is an odd place. A tight global food situation with record-high grain prices presents the possibility of increasing malnutrition, perhaps famine, in parts of Africa and South Asia. Yet an estimated 1.6 billion adults, about a quarter of the world's 6.7 billion people, are overweight, some of them obese.Something is seriously wrong when we eat so much food, we need to spend money to get rid of our excess fat. How glutenous is our nation?
As a result, chubby Americans are spending roughly $1 billion a year to lose a few pounds with special diets, treadmills, etc., while hundreds of millions in poor nations are scrambling to buy enough food to add a little weight. "You couldn't write any stranger fiction," says Joseph Chamie, former head of the United Nation's Population Division.
And that's not all, what about all the food we just throw away because we either can't finish it all or it goes bad before we can eat it because we are too busy eating other food?
There has to be a better system to live in...
Luckily despite all that we can still make a difference. If you haven't yet, please consider sponsoring a child (trust me you won't ever regret it).
I don't think I've told you all about our first son Zakeyo Zulu. He's a cutie from Makungwa Africa (the town with Brian's Well). Or maybe $30 a month is too much for you right now. How about $7 a month? Back in December I wrote a post about the Mocha Club, you can read it here (and there is a link on the right hand side of this page). Or maybe $7 is too much, so how about just playing a game? I also wrote about a website called FreeRice.com where if you answer a word problem correctly they will donate rice to the hungry (there's a banner at the bottom of the page).There. Now you have plenty of options on how to help, so get to it!

i know what you mean. at costco they have this thing called D&D, where at the end of the day if there is any food left over (and there always is) you have to dump it. i was tossing trays of sandwiches and pizzas out like bird seed. i know it would be impractical to send that away to starving nations, but still, what a waste.
wow, i read sam's comment and that's just terrible! at the very least JOHN BRANHAM could be eating those!
haha. Well great blog, jen, I've been doing free rice.com every once in a while, and my vocab is building! lol
talk to you later!
@sam: no kidding? You would think we could at least give that to the homeless or something...
@john: haha! That's wonderful - I mean, prodigious!
